Welcome to the very first edition of Laminated, our weekly set of soccer predictions inspired by, well, this tweet. For more information on this new recurring column, head on over here.

"You can't predict things in football because anything can happen.”

That’s a quote from one of the greatest central midfielders of all time, Luka Modric. I’m not bold enough to argue with Modric about many soccer topics, but I’ll argue with him on this one. Sure, anything can happen in this game. But what’s stopping us from making a few predictions along the way? I mean, come on, we all know that Real Salt Lake will sneak into the Western Conference’s last playoff spot every year for the rest of eternity. It’s not rocket science, people. That’s just how this sport works.

With a packed American soccer calendar this year (weirdly, mine only has pictures of Brek Shea each month), we’re kicking off this first edition of Laminated with a set of five American soccer predictions for 2023.
