The U.S. women's national team's first game of 2023 is in the books: a 4-0 win over New Zealand in New Zealand on Tuesday night. At least it was Tuesday for those of us here in the United States. For the players, it was Wednesday over on the other side of the world. The U.S. plays New Zealand again on Friday, or Saturday depending on where you live.

But why travel thousands and thousands of miles to New Zealand just for a pair of friendlies? Spoiler alert, that's where the World Cup is.
