What we learned about the USMNT in Gold Cup final loss to Mexico – and this summer as a whole

Let's dig into the United States' 2-1 loss to Mexico in the Gold Cup final on Sunday.

The U.S. men’s national team fell 2-1 to Mexico in the Gold Cup final on Sunday evening. Sanjay Sujanthakumar and Joe Lowery combine to share their rapid-fire thoughts on the USMNT’s defeat at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Let's run through what we learned about the United States from their latest meeting with El Tri – and from the Gold Cup as a whole – by answering five key questions.

What’s your one-sentence reaction to that game?

Lowery: The USMNT’s group of World Cup hopefuls started strong, but couldn’t hang with full-strength Mexico.

Can you give me a little more than that?

Lowery: The USMNT took an abrupt early lead on a set piece in the fourth minute, with Sebastian Berhalter and Chris Richards linking up for their second dead-ball goal of the Gold Cup. Though there was some initial confusion about whether Richards’ impressively executed header had crossed the line, the U.S. was awarded the game’s opening goal.
