USL League One: Athletic Club Boise's new stadium raises the bar & everything else

From a shiny new venue to evolving tactical setups, here's what stood out from League One's latest action.

Athletic Club Boise

How predictive is the table when you’re in the first week of April? Last season, five of USL League One’s playoff clubs were already in a top-eight position at this point in the season. Six out of eight qualifiers were in position in the 2024 campaign. There are plenty of matches to go and plenty of drama yet to play out, but the early trends in League One are meaningful.

Week 5 added fuel to the fire, with only one match ending in a draw. Amidst all the decisive results, which players and teams stood out? Let’s dig in.

Athletic Club Boise, raising the standard

The biggest headline of the weekend wasn’t an on-field development. Instead, Athletic Club Boise’s home debut in their own soccer-specific stadium in front of more than 7,000 fans stole the show in Week 5.

A USL League One expansion effort in Boise was first announced in the fall of 2024, and the nascent club used the pursuant year-and-a-half to create deep inroads in their city. Boise adopted a brand informed by the local Basque immigrant culture, consistently hosted community events (including the crest reveal itself) to raise awareness, and allowed an independent supporter culture to arise in parallel. On Saturday night, more than 150 members of the River Guard supporters group marched to the stadium and made their voices heard.
