This week, the Birmingham Legion finalized the sale of teenaged defender Ramiz Hamouda to the Bundesliga. Meanwhile, rumors are swirling that Sacramento Republic have signed off on a move to FC Dallas for Da’vian Kimbrough, a midfielder who made national headlines when he earned a pro debut at age 13.
Hamouda was far from great when he first arrived in Alabama, but he always got real opportunities to play. Sacramento isn’t averse to playing prospects – teenagers like Blake Willey and Chibi Ukaegbu have been regulars in recent years – but prioritize winning over all else, hence why Kimbrough has only appeared eight times in total since that 2023 debut. There isn’t one “correct” way to develop young players, and both Birmingham and Sacramento rate among the USL’s most progressive clubs in that area by any standard.
Taken together, however, the Hamouda and Kimbrough experiences underline the same point: nothing is more important than playing time.
Beyond those long-term questions, Week 13 in the USL Championship continued to muddy the competitive waters across the league. After a slew of major results, where do all 25 clubs fall, and how’d they get there? Let’s dig in.

Imagine a Civil War battle, with the Union Army marching ceaselessly forward, bayonets ahead. If one soldier falls at the front of the line, another will take his place. I’m not here to say Dominic Casciato is the USL’s Ulysses S. Grant, but the way he’s able to churn through tactical options until the opposition is overwhelmed is positively warlike. Away to LouCity this weekend, the introduction of Laurence Wyke into a surprise back five was the opening salvo in yet another tactically sophisticated victory.
