U.S. Open Cup superlatives: A former top USMNT prospect delivers & the Carolina Reaper

From the impressive fan attire to the cup-sets, the second round of this year's Open Cup wasn't short on incredible scenes.

El Paso Locomotive

The second round of this year’s US Open Cup only featured two Cup-sets, but it was still full of local rivalries and exhilarating moments worth admiring. Three games went to a penalty shootout; three more were decided by a goal after the 90th minute.

In a jam-packed round, what stood out the most ahead of the round of 32 and the introduction of MLS clubs? I’m assigning superlatives to help find out.

Goal of the Round

Alex Mendez was once a top-tier prospect for the US men’s national team, and while he didn’t quite live up to that sky-high potential, he’s found his niche in 2026. Now a member of the El Paso Locomotive, the 25-year-old has arguably been the best midfielder in the USL Championship and showed why in the Open Cup.

Seriously, though. Absolutely ridiculous goal from 30 yards, outside of the boot, ping it. Locomotive cruising now up 3-0 after Rubio Rubin adds another. #USOC2026

El Paso wiped the floor with their Derby del Camino Real rivals on Wednesday night, crushing New Mexico United by a 4-0 scoreline. Mendez scored the best goal of the bunch to give his side a 2-0 edge in the 63rd minute. Lining up a left-sided free kick on his left foot, Mendez managed to put an unreal amount of spin on his powerful shot, beating the opposing goalie and sending his side into the next round with ease.
