Where we left off last year
2025 season: 32 points, 13th in the Western Conference, 24th in MLS
Olof Mellberg? Fired. Lutz Pfannenstiel? Fired? Playoffs? Missed. In just about every sense, last season was a wasted year for St. Louis City. They struggled to gain ground in even a poor Western Conference, making clear along the way that their impressive debut season back in 2023 was a blip rather than the start of a trend. To the club’s credit, a revamp of St. Louis’ sporting department followed that realization. After just 15 games, their head coach was axed. In August, City cut ties with their sporting director.
Now it’s truly a new era for St. Louis City. So, what will that new era look like?
What changed in the offseason
Notable arrivals:
- Corey Wray, chief soccer officer: A highly regarded, experienced MLS decision-maker, Wray was hired in November to lead St. Louis’ front office. Wray, who’s time in charge of CF Montreal’s sporting department was cut short for CF Montreal reasons, is best known for being a key part of Toronto FC and the Columbus Crew when both of those clubs were at their best. He’s a strong addition.
- Yoann Damet, manager: The youngest person to coach an MLS game (at age 29!) when he took over as an interim for FC Cincinnati in 2019, Damet arrives from Ohio’s other MLS club. He served as an assistant to Wilfried Nancy in Columbus and was widely viewed as one of the top candidates to make the assistant-to-head coach jump this winter before doing just that.
