One might think that watching an absurd amount of MLS would make me better than the average person at predicting what goes on in and around the league.
One would be wrong. I’m just as foolish as the next guy — and I know this because only the most unwise individual even tries to predict MLS, a league purpose-built for parity with thin margins separating the best from the worst. Back in preseason, I made 10 predictions for this year’s MLS season. January 3rd, 2025. That’s when the predictions went live here at Backheeled. That’s the day when I exposed my foolishness to the world.
How did I do in my attempt to predict the unpredictable? Let’s revisit all 10 of my MLS predictions to find out.
The prediction: One MLS player will move for at least $20 million
The result: Close but no cigar.
I predicted that either Cucho Hernandez or Gabriel Pec would hit the $20 million mark on an outgoing move, and Cucho came close-ish with his $16 million (plus add-ons) move from the Columbus Crew to Real Betis last winter.
