No, you’re not crazy. We’re just one weekend away from MLS’s World Cup, with clubs hitting the pause button for almost two months while the country shifts its attention to the biggest tournament in sports.
By the time teams hit the field again in mid-July, the transfer window will have opened, moves will have been made, and new players will have moved to new teams. Here at Backheeled, we’re taking off our news breaker hat (let’s be honest, it’s a knockoff hat we made ourselves and rarely wear) and putting on our speculation hat. We’re looking at massive names in Europe or elsewhere who could move to MLS, and where they could end up in this hypothetical reality.
Suspend your disbelief and come on a ride with us!
Mohammed Salah
The team that makes sense: San Diego FC
San Diego have been crying out for a Designated Player winger since they exiled Chucky Lozano, and Mohammed Salah, nearing his final game with Liverpool, would clearly make an impact on and off the field. Let’s not kid ourselves here – his production declined this season, but he’s still a good Premier League player and would instantly be one of the most dangerous attackers in MLS in a market that can still use a star name to drum up some buzz. Add in the Egyptian connection with club owner Sir Mohamed Mansour, and it makes a lot of sense.
The team that could crash the party: LAFC
LAFC. Summer window. Open DP spot. Older attacker coming from Europe. It’s happened before.
