The five most interesting questions of MLS’s summer transfer window: Star signings, rebuilds & cash trades

Here are the storylines worth monitoring ahead of the transfer window opening on Thursday.

The summer transfer window is, at its core, an opportunity for MLS teams to change their fate. With teams in most of the world’s biggest leagues wheeling and dealing ahead of a new season, club executives are listing players and hunting for upgrades.

Sure, MLS’s summer transfer window sits at an awkward time in its own soccer calendar. Unlike major European teams, MLS teams aren’t gearing up for a campaign this time of year — they’re entering the playoff push. Without much runway to integrate signings, then, MLS front office members have to walk a fine line between finding players who can bed in right away and ones who can contribute next season. That awkward balance is one of the things that could lead MLS to reshape its calendar to more closely mirror that of the biggest European leagues, where talent and financial resources are at their peak.
