Following Inter Miami’s fifth loss in their last seven matches across all competitions, Lionel Messi took part in a rare postgame interview on Sunday evening. Speaking to MLS Season Pass reporter Michele Giannone, Messi criticized MLS refereeing and the head referee for Miami’s 3-0 loss to Orlando City, Guido Gonzales Jr.
“We had a great first half, we were attacking, creating scoring chances," Messi told Apple TV after the game. "Then there was a strange play where one of their players gave the [Orlando City] goalkeeper a pass and the referee said, he told me, he didn’t know the rule and didn’t see it that way.”
“From there came their long pass and the goal,” Messi said. “Sometimes there are errors in critical moments. It happened in the last game, too. Those aren’t excuses, but there are always issues with referees and I think MLS has to look at some of the officiating.”
