Welcome back to Backheeled’s weekly journey around the world of MLS, where we look at players, teams, stats, videos, and the downright bizarre.
Onward!
We’re not talking about this team enough: Vancouver Whitecaps
Yes, the ‘Caps got clapped in Concacaf Champions Cup action last week by the Seattle Sounders. I don’t think they were as bad as the 3-0 scoreline made it seem – rather, they were undone by some sloppy defending and suboptimal finishing. Regardless, they’re probably heading for a CCC exit.
And while they’d obviously love to repeat their 2026 run to the final, I don’t think shifting their full focus to the league schedule would be the worst thing. Why? Well, because they’ve been dominant. Four games. Four wins. 14 goals scored. One allowed. A 6-0 pasting of Minnesota United this weekend. I mean, check out this chart.

Vancouver were better in every single phase of the game. Three goals from open play. One set piece goal. Two penalty kicks. 13 shots inside the box to their opponent’s seven. This was a beatdown of the Loons.
