Inside the mind of Jesper Sorensen, whose blueprint has made the Vancouver Whitecaps a trophy threat

The first-year Vancouver manager calls MLS “the most interesting league in the world”. Here’s how his team is dominating it.

I’m willing to bet that you, dear reader, have at least one thing in common with Jesper Sorensen: you’re both infatuated with MLS.

Now, the first-year Vancouver Whitecaps manager isn’t afraid to admit that he “didn’t know much about” the league prior to being named Vanni Sartini’s replacement back in January. But since then? He’s become fascinated by MLS.

“In MLS, football is very much alive,” the 52-year-old told Backheeled. “The parity in the league is very, very good. It doesn’t matter if you play a top team or a lower team in the standings. Every team is competitive…For me [MLS] is the most interesting league in the  world,” he added later.

Sorensen is hooked on MLS and quick to draw a sharp contrast between his current surroundings and those of his native country. “I’m from Denmark, where if you go back the last 10 years, probably three teams or something have won the championship…if you go to Germany, now we have Thomas [Muller]. He’s played 17 years. I think he won 14 championships.”
