Does travel actually matter in MLS? Well, maybe not as much as we think

Plus, the league’s best away teams.

Travel is a hot discussion topic in MLS circles, and why shouldn’t it be? There’s sure a lot of it.

The Columbus Crew, who had the lowest travel distance of any MLS team over the past three seasons, averaged over 650 miles one-way per away day. For comparison, that’s nearly twice as long as the longest road trip in the entire Premier League. Travel also varies wildly between teams. The Vancouver Whitecaps averaged over 1,500 miles per road trip (the most in the league – and, again, one-way as all distances in this piece will be) over that same period where the Crew averaged 650.

Now, with wildly disparate travel distances across the league, it would be easy to think that travel distance would impact results. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.
