If you read Backheeled’s weekly USL Championship Power Rankings, you’re getting the view of a hyper-specific point in time. Are, say, the Las Vegas Lights actually the sixth-best team in the USL? Are there truly 14 clubs with a better shot at a trophy than Louisville City? The answer to both of those questions is probably “no.”
With 10 weeks to play in the Championship’s regular season, it’s useful to reframe the competitive landscape. When push comes to shove at the end of October, which clubs have a genuine shot at winning a title? I’m categorizing all 25 teams into the contenders and the pretenders to find out.
The Contenders
The clubs with a nailed-on shot at a title
The Tampa Bay Rowdies are the undisputed favorites to win the Players’ Shield and, potentially, to do the double. With 44 points, Tampa Bay are currently 10 points clear of their closest pursuer; they’re sitting on a +19 goal difference and earning a +0.95 xG margin per match. Dom Casciato’s side started 2026 on a hot streak, and they’ve come through a slight rough patch with new recruits (Conner Antley, Ethan Bartlow) and an even higher ceiling.
While the Sacramento Republic are currently sitting fifth in the West, they’re tied for the conference’s best goal difference and just added a game-changer in striker Cal Jennings. With Memo Rodriguez and Jack Gurr hitting their stride after early-season absences, the Neill Collins system has become clearer and clearer with each passing week. For a Republic team that’s allowed just 16 goals – the least in the USL – the Jennings signing rounds out a roster that could already hang their hat on an elite defense.
