Where we left off last year
2025 season: 28 points, 13th in the Eastern Conference, 28th in MLS
Another year, another bottom-half-of-the-conference finish from Montreal. We've seen that story play out in eight of the last nine seasons, the one exception taking place during Wilfried Nancy's tenure.
More than just bad, of course, 2025 was chaotic for CF Montreal. Head coach Laurent Courtois was axed just five games into the year. Chief soccer officer Corey Wray was shown the door partway through the season, leaving owner Joey Saputo’s sons in charge of the roster build. Oh, and what bad, chaotic season could be complete without a summer letter to fans? Things were bleak. Will they be any less so in 2026?
What changed in the offseason
Notable arrivals:
- Marco Donadel, manager: Promoted from interim manager to manager over the offseason, Donadel spent all but the first month of last season leading Montreal on the sidelines after Courtois was dismissed. The 42-year-old ended his playing career as a member of the Montreal Impact and rejoined the club ahead of last season as an assistant.
- Brayan Vera, CB: Acquired from Real Salt Lake in exchange for at least $1.2 in GAM, Vera should see starting minutes in the middle of the backline this season. The 27-year-old doesn’t truly excel at any one skill, but he should raise the floor for a team that allowed the fifth-most non-penalty xG in MLS last season, as per FBref.
