Welcome to the MLS offseason and the magical world of the cash trade, or as we here at Backheeled are pushing into the mainstream nomenclature, the “cashfer”.
Last winter, MLS announced a wrinkle in their roster building rules, allowing clubs to buy and sell players from inside the league for real, actual dollars, not just the allocation money that previously changed hands. General Allocation Money still gets exchanged for players all the time, but cashfers have opened up an entirely new category of player trades, with previous untouchables like Evander, Lucho Acosta, Djordje Mihailovic, and others now available to move teams within MLS instead of being lost foreign clubs.
Keeping all that in mind, let’s look at six players who would make sense to target for cash trades.
